Room to Land - On Orientation, Safety and Settling
Podcast: Yoga, Ayurveda and Somatic Wisdom for Modern Life - Episode 13
There's something that sounds almost too simple. And yet the more I sit with it, the more I believe it might be one of the most foundational things the nervous system needs.
Orientation.
What this episode is about
From a Somatic Experiencing perspective, orientation is the nervous system's way of asking: Where am I, and is it safe enough to be here? Before it can settle, connect, learn or grow - it needs that space. And in the speed of modern life, it's often one of the first things we skip.
In this episode I explore what orientation actually is, why it matters, and what happens when it's missing.
When we're thrown straight into something new and expected to perform or keep up before we've had any time to actually arrive - the system doesn't just skip that step unaffected. It compensates. And those compensations can keep running for years.
I also share something personal - a period in my own life when there was simply no room to land, and what shifted in a recent session when I finally let myself feel what that younger version of me had actually needed.
Creating room to orient is not a delay before the real work starts. It is the first part of the real work.
