Ashtanga Yoga in Groningen & Online - 6 Days a Week

In 2010, I founded Bhumi Yoga in Groningen. At Bhumi Yoga we take a personal and inclusive approach to teaching Ashtanga Yoga where everyone can feel at home. All are welcome.
I emphasize a non-dogmatic approach
In addition to traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga, my background in Ayurveda and Somatic Experiencing (nervous system–informed work) naturally shapes the way I hold space in our Mysore room—bringing a grounded, attuned presence that honors each practitioner’s unique process, energy, and rhythm.

No two bodies or lives are the same!
For that reason, all teaching is one-on-one within a group. I am able to offer personal guidance to all students to meet them where they are. All bodies, ability, ages, sizes, genders are welcome; Anyone can enjoy the practice of yoga safely at any stage in their life.
Meeting what you need as an individual
In the practice you will see daily practitioners of 10+ years side-by-side with someone taking their first class. Each student receives personal guidance tailored to their unique body, experience, and rhythm of life. Together, we shape a steady and responsive practice—one that supports you through different seasons and circumstances. This approach allows the practice to meet you where you are, while also offering a clear and grounded structure to grow from.
What are classes at Bhumi Yoga like?
Our yoga tradition is within Mysore Ashtanga Yoga. A “Mysore” program is the traditional way to teach and practice Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and was born in the Indian city of Mysore.

Benefits of this practice

Allows you to build up a personal yoga practice rather than following what everyone is doing (which may not be best for you)
You can take your practice anywhere
When your practice is personalized and regular, it touches deeper layers and cultivates the ability to truly shift your body, mind and life
A focused and gentle atmosphere which is conducive to drawing the senses inward
Practicing in the morning sets you up for a day of energy and clarity for the day
You become a part of a supportive community of practitioners with no hierarchy - everyone is focused on their own path
The amount of personal guidance you get here is incredible. Maxi helps you and teaches you to shape your yoga practice in such a way that it is really what you need. The atmosphere in the yoga school is open and relaxed, the opposite of the idea of "performance and complicated poses" that Astangha Yoga sometimes has.

In my experience, Maxi is a warm, loving and highly experienced teacher! I have one missing hand and chronic back pain, yet Maxi was able to adjust the practice according to my individual needs and help me with my back pain. She seems to have an intuitive feeling which enables her to bring everyone deeper into the sacred practice of Ashtanga Yoga who is willing to challenge him or herself. Thank you Maxi for everything!

When I started at Bhumi Yoga, I was overwhelmed and not feeling well - physically and emotionally. The Ashtanga Mysore practice helped me reconnect with my body, listen to its needs, and make better choices in my life. This practice has been a powerful tool for change. What I value most is the energy of the space and the strong, supportive community. It’s a safe place where I feel connected, free to explore, and grow.

At 70, I never felt too old or out of place in the Ashtanga Mysore Style. From the first workshop with Maxi, I felt at home. Her loving, personal guidance and creative adjustments make practice a joy - I come and leave the studio happy. I now practice at home almost daily and see real progress in strength and flexibility. It's amazing what you can do when you open yourself to it!

I have been practicing at Bhumi Yoga for the past four years - always lovely and worthwhile! I especially appreciate how Maxi makes all the poses of Ashtanga Yoga so accessible for everyone and anyone. Also, not one class passes by without sharing laughter and kind words. I’d recommend coming here to anyone who is curious to try a different and more personal approach to yoga.

A wonderful place to practice Ashtanga yoga, I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve been practicing for almost a year now and I notice much more calm and centeredness in my yoga practice but also my daily life. Maxi is a great teacher and the Mysore style means that you always get personal attention and adjustments. Highly recommended!

With a demanding job, constant travel, and family stress, I turned to Ashtanga Yoga to ease stiffness and build core strength. Maxi’s guidance helped me commit to a practice I can take anywhere. Over time, I’ve become more flexible, visit the chiropractor far less, and feel mentally steadier. Yoga has taught me discipline, self-understanding, and how to stay calm amidst life’s demands

I came to Bhumi Yoga after back pain and repeated chiropractor visits no longer made sense. Ashtanga intrigued me—its tradition, its self-led structure, and the ability to practice anywhere. I’ve now practiced here for 1.5 years. Mornings were a stretch at first, but I leave feeling energized and relaxed. What keeps me coming back? The extraordinary personal attention, the strong sense of belonging, and how good it feels in body and mind.

I was drawn to Maxi’s teaching because she embodies what she shares and always explains the how and why behind the practice. After years of led classes the Mysore Style felt unfamiliar at first, but I quickly felt its depth.. Over time, I’ve become more patient, aware, and steady - not just in my body, but also in my mind. Practicing at Bhumi Yoga feels like coming home: the energy, the skilled adjustments, the clear guidance, and the consistent space support real, lasting progress.

Since starting my yoga journey at Bhumi Yoga in 2020, the integration of asana, kriya, and pranayama - guided with care by Maxi - has transformed how I show up in life. It’s brought me deeper presence, self-knowledge, and the ability to make more conscious choices. The peaceful shala, Maxi’s attuned guidance, and the supportive atmosphere help me stay grounded in my practice, both on and off the mat. I’m deeply grateful to have found this space - right here in Groningen.

After a trial month of Ashtanga Mysore at Bhumi Yoga, I completely fell in love with the practice. What first felt intimidating quickly became empowering - the practice is personalized, supportive, and deeply grounding. Maxi’s sensitive and skilled guidance made me feel safe and seen, and I now carry that sense of belonging and clarity with me into my home practice and beyond. I’m so grateful I was introduced to this tradition through her.

I thought Mysore classes would be way too much—6:30am, self-led practice? But what I found was a warm, gentle space where I could surrender and grow. At Bhumi Yoga, I discovered yoga truly is for everyone. Maxi’s guidance is intuitive and calming, even in a full room. Now, morning Mysore is my favorite way to start the day—I feel calm, grounded, and amazed at my own progress.

When I finally joined a trial month of Mysore practice, I immediately felt I was in the right place. The step-by-step, one-on-one approach made me feel cared for, unlike other yoga experiences I’d had.
Mysore style allows me to connect deeply with my body’s changing needs each day, adjusting my practice accordingly. The focus on sound breathing helps me stay present and calm, leaving me energized after each session. Even with a busy life, I don’t feel overwhelmed - yoga helps me surrender and find balance.

I enjoy going to Maxi's shala. Learning the mysore exercises gives me great satisfaction. Receiving individual instructions took some getting used to, but I wouldn't have it any other way now. Maxi intuitively fits well with my pace and way of learning. This gives me confidence in my own abilities. The atmosphere in the shala is very pleasant. I feel welcome.
